NYFW Day Two and Day Three: Home Is Where The Heart Is

The house dress gets a remodeling and the art of partying comes back into fashion…

Homebodies rejoice! Dressing for the comfort of your home is now in style. Free flowing house dresses and kaftans are showing up on digital runways.

It’s the second to the last day of Spring/Summer 2021 NYFW. The usually robust show schedule stunted by the pandemic is taking over online, making it easier to take part in the excitement from the safety of our homes. And while it may seem short lived (there are only 4 days of shows as opposed to the week in previous seasons), there’s still plenty of looks to explore from a virtual standpoint. Anna Sui brings back the shoe-sandal combo, Badgley Mischka indulges our wanderlust and Claudi Li reawakes our urge to party.

Here are some of Bazaar’s favorite looks from “the shows” (if we can still call them that!) yesterday.

Anna Sui Got Crafty

Dubbed “Heartland,” Anna Sui’s collection was shot in a playful lookbook and accompanying video.

Models wore darling looks in pastel pinks and creams in front of a makeshift dollhouse painted by Sarah Oliphant, a master backdrop painter. Sui also tapped other talents to help complete her collection. Master craftsmen (and women)–like Birdie Purl, who made recycled tote bags and Graphic Designer Stevie Shao, whose designs are shown on a few looks. The list goes on.

Inspired by resourceful homemakers during the 1930s Dust Bowl, the idea behind Sui’s collection was to look inward, nurturing raw, homegrown talent rather than cold machinery. Also note, socks and sandals look to be making a subtle appearance through the collection.

Badgley Mischka Goes on Holiday

Mark Badgley and James Mischka’s spirited collection takes us on vacation–no passport required. When travel was shut down by the pandemic, the design duo realized the only way to take flight was through their imagination. (And some carefully choreographed zoom meetings with the brand’s team.)

The utopian isles of Greece, Havana and parts of South America come together in living color. Piercing blues, greens and poppy reds dazzle in their lookbook video shot in the historic Old Westbury Manor in Long Island.

Life’s a Party for Claudia Li

Shot in the concrete chaos of New York City, Claudia Li’s collection looks forward to the future. It’s strange to think about now but remember when toasting your friend’s promotion at your favorite restaurant or dancing unabashedly to your treasured 90s band at the local music venue wasn’t so taboo? Now a distant memory, Li wants to bring back the idea of ‘living in the moment.’

Sequined looks in shades of opal and vivid neon pinks parade away in a lookbook modeled by her artist friend, Kennedy Yanko. She looks to be on her way to some exclusive party. Where? I’m not sure, but I’m hoping to join her as soon as possible.
