Celebrating life’s dualities the latest collection of handbags from Tory Burch, has brought together two of the worlds talents to create a undoubtedly chic photo collaboration. Shot in Los Angeles by photographer and stylist Margaret Zhang who like Tory is a Gemini, Zhang captures the laid-back yet elegant vibes of not only the collection but the city itself. Staring in the images, actress Kate Bosworth brings the bags to life with the symmetrical double link symbol taking centre stage. Here Zhang and Bosworth take Bazaar behind the scenes of the shoot and share some style tips along the way.
What’s in my Gemini Link bag... Film camera, phone, credit card, Lucas’ Paw Paw ointment, coins of about 4 different currencies and probably a few stray earrings!
And what I love about the style... It’s a very practical size – most bags today I find to be barely able to fit a phone, or just so overwhelmingly large that you feel obliged to fill it with unnecessary things just to justify its existence.
My style tips for wearing bag during the day... Slouchy boyfriend blazer and high-waisted trousers, pointed flats with a small block heel.
And at night... 90s slip dress, matte dark lipstick, skintight boots.
When getting dressed, bag first vs outfit first... Outfit first - I usually start with outerwear, work my way in then reach for the closest bag in sight.
The two sides to my personality... Obsessively meticulous vs turbulently emotive
Being in front of the camera vs. behind it... I love being behind the camera as this really is the control seat for any imagery produced. However, I’ve learnt so much being in front of the camera and having the opportunity to work with so many other talented creatives that I might not have otherwise.
Left brain or right brain — I am (and how so)... I think the only way I stay sane is to bounce between using both – for instance, the difference in mindset between consulting on digital marketing strategy and writing a treatment for a fashion film, is refreshing and necessary to sustain inspiration.
The key to balancing the creative and business sides of fashion...
I think they naturally balance each other so well - when you come up against a road block in business, you need creativity to solve it, and vice versa. It’s hard to make an impact with your creative ideas flexing a bit of business muscle.
My zodiac sign... As it happens, I’m a Gemini.
How would you describe the Tory Burch line... Ageless with global inspirations.
Reason why you decided to collaborate with Tory Burch and how did this project come about? I’d been in conversation with Tory and her team from earlier on in the year about building a visual representation of modern women and their dualities, aligned with Tory’s Gemini collection. Kate was an obvious subject, as an intelligent, multi- faceted and creative individual with a diverse range of interests and knowledge, who is sure of herself and her career.
Give us one behind the scenes fact from set... The owner of the home we shot in had two gorgeous Hungarian Viszla dogs who were everyone’s favourite crew members on the day, for sure.
How did you envision the photo series and why did you choose the location? I didn’t want to shoot forced lifestyle imagery or sterile studio imagery. We wanted to build a story around Kate’s evolving character in an intimate environment with a visual reference to film stills. The clean lines of this house in the hills in Los Angeles complimented our storyline perfectly.
What was your favourite look? Kate’s all-white look (wide-legged pants and embellished pants) surrounded by the contrast of orange furnishings and striped lighting from the blinds was hands down everyone’s favourite shot on set.
How was it working with Kate? Kate is a pro in front of the lens. It makes all the different when your subject is calm and comfortable in their own skin, and knows how to move.
How do you describe Kate’s and Tory’s styles.... Tory: Classic and versatile. Kate: Refined with streamlined silhouettes.
What’s in my Gemini Link bag... I-Phone, Glossier balm, Glossier stretch concealer, Chanel lipstick, Tory Burch Sunglasses, wallet, small grey moleskin for notes, Mont blanc pen, gum (big red), small snack if I am running around like almonds or an apple.
And what I love about the style... I love the aesthetic. It has a cool 70’s California vibe that I love so much but is also a classic. But perhaps what I love most is what the Gemini Link bag represents, which is the multiple roles we take on as powerful women. I am an actress, a producer, a stepmother, a friend, a wife... we are all many things and I adore that this bag embodies this sentiment.
My style tips for wearing bag during the day... I wear it with a great pair of flared blue jeans with a simple white t shirt. I feel that the bag should speak for itself (I’m partial to the rainbow striped version).
And at night... Black leather pants with an oversized boyfriend sweater, make it cool and edgy but casual and easy.
The two sides to my personality... Professional and casual home life. When I am working or on set I am laser focused in terms of what needs to be accomplished professionally. When I am home, I am relaxed and casual. Normally drinking a whiskey and having fun with my husband.
The key to balancing work and life... Read above - it’s about knowing when to wear what hat.
My zodiac sign... Capricorn. I am a stubborn sea goat that knows exactly what she wants and works very hard to make her dreams a reality.
I got into horseback riding because... I have a deep affinity to horses. I am most relaxed and happy when I am riding. Some people do Yoga or mediation to clear their minds. I ride horses. One of the first times I was on a horse I was bucked off and landed hard. I was 6 years old. I dusted myself off and got right back on. I was determined. It’s now my approach to life.
My pro tips to the horse-riding newbie... Love it. Be patient. You won’t be perfect at first, but becoming one with the animal is the most liberating feeling in the world.
What are your thoughts about Tory Burch the brand and person? I truly admire Tory and the brand she has built. The most successful brands are clearly an interpretation of an individual and his or her tastes and expressions. She is always true to herself and she never compromises her vision. She is powerful and strong and pure. All things I love.
How did this project come about? Tory asked me to be a part of the Gemini Link bag series and I jumped at the chance because not only do I love and admire her, but I also appreciate what the bag represents. The Gemini Link is about duality in women.
Margaret Zhang is such an up and coming star. What was it like to work with her? Margaret is brilliant. She knows exactly what she wants, but she directs in such an effortless and cool way. Her entire photography team is made of women and we all felt very unified and empowered working together.
What was one interesting behind the scene factoid about the shoot? We all wanted to take the vintage car home!
What was your favourite look? We all loved the silk pant + top look in the chair back lit in the room with the blinds shadowing. It felt very cool and classic.
Describe Tory’s Style: Strong yet feminine. she exudes exactly how every working woman wants to feel - put together and effortless. There is power in restraint and I love seeing this in her approach to design.
What is your favourite piece from the Tory Burch line- new or older? Honestly, my favourite piece is the oversized rainbow striped Gemini link bag! It personifies California cool meets classical east coast. As I was raised equally on the West and East coasts, this dual aesthetic happens to be the two sides to me.
