Here’s Why We’re Obsessed With This Moscow-based Ready-to-Wear Label

When Hailey Bieber wears one of your designs you can be pretty sure you’ve made it. And we can see why ready-to-wear label Kalmanovich is suddenly mustering up a strong celeb following, with Chrissy Teigen, Erin Foster, former BAZAAR cover star Yara Shahidi and more all now part of its loyal fanbase.

Born out of Moscow in 2009, Kalmanovich is the brainchild of Julia Kalmanovich, who was inspired to create collections that celebrated the street style movements she sees throughout her daily life. Each collection uses luxurious fabrics to create statement pieces that are bold and romantic, evolving with each new season.

Julia’s love for fashion began at an early age when, with a basic understanding of a sewing machine, she experimented with alterations and designing as a hobby throughout school. She then went onto study under renowned costume designer Slava Zaitsev, known as the patriarch of Russian fashion, where she learned all about the elaborate dressmaking disciplines, she would go on to emulate.

Crafting designs for the hopeless romantic, she works strictly with chic eveningwear, creating one-of-a-kind dresses perfect for a red carpet event or black-tie wedding. One of our fave pieces from her new collection, the orange sequin cutout dress would definitely ensure all eyes stay on you, while more understated black creations make for a classic yet sophisticated look.

“I believe Arab women deeply value unique design, quality fabrics and excellent fit which is why my collections do so well,” Julia told Harper’s BAZAAR Arabia. “For the last 10 years, I have worked to make sure these three aspects have been consistent throughout every collection created.

“In the Middle East, women are not afraid to explore new styles and trends.  Their want to experiment gives way for emerging designers to be able to compete with established brands.”
