Interview: Galvan London Is The Eveningwear Brand Celebrities Can't Get Enough Of

London-based label Galvan is the eveningwear brand on everyone's lips. The label has been worn by plenty of A-list celebrities over the last few years, including Heidi Klum and Amanda Hearst, who both chose the the Ivory Pandora halter-neck gown for their wedding day.

As their first capsule collection of chic new handbags just dropped for autumn/winter 2019, BAZAAR chats with founders Anna-Christin Haas, Sola Harrison, Katherine Holmgren and Carolyn Franks to find out more about fashion's favourite new brand.

Harper's BAZAAR Arabia: How was Galvan born?
Galvan London: We started Galvan in 2014 because we saw a need for a new kind of eveningwear – clean, cool, pared down. This need, which is relevant to so many women today, motivates and inspires us to push the boundaries for an evening brand. Galvan comes from our shared longing for a more cosmopolitan approach, for something fashion-forward yet timeless, which can be styled differently and worn repeatedly.

HBA: What is the story behind the name of the brand?
Galvan London: Galvan comes from the word Galvanise which evokes energy, excitement and empowerment - we hope our clients feel galvanised when wearing a Galvan piece!

HBA: What was the inspiration behind your autumn/winter 2019 collection?
Galvan London: Our autumn/winter 2019 collection was inspired by an island in Bali called Uluwatu - the wonderful green shades of the jungle, the rich golden, mustard and earthy tones of the landscape, a hand-printed pattern for a leopard print, all combined with neon colours in neoprene fabrics inspired by the surfers in Bali. The contrast of these two worlds was particularly important to us, it made everything more modern.

HBA: What came first – eveningwear or bridalwear?
Galvan London: We first launched Galvan to fill a gap in the market for eveningwear. Last year we launched bridal as a natural extension of ready-to-wear since our clients were also looking for sleek, chic bridal options that were in line with their personal style.

HBA: How do you feel about famous personalities Heidi Klum and Amanda Hearst wearing the same gown to celebrate their nuptials?
Galvan London: We feel so honoured that these stylish, accomplished and beautiful women chose to wear Galvan for their special bridal celebrations.

HBA: What inspired the gown?
Galvan London: A cropped version of our signature Pandora style, this dress is a timeless and elegant design. The mid-calf length makes the piece perfect for showcasing heels or wearing with effortless flats. Like our other signature designs, this creation came from a desire to offer a more modern and cool take on bridal, as well as versatile pieces that can be styled differently and worn again outside of a bridal context.

HBA: Your collections blur the lines between evening wear & bridal wear – was this on purpose? Do you think your dresses can be worn for all occasions?
Galvan London: Our collections focus on occasion wear and evening wear, which for a lot of clients tends to be wedding-related. A satin slip dress is so versatile and timeless. It makes the perfect bridesmaid dress, for instance, but can be worn again and again in a non-bridal context.

HBA: One of the most iconic Galvan red carpet moments?
Galvan London: We like to think that our Galvan clients are women of style and substance, and someone who embodies this is the wonderful actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, for whom we have had the honour of creating a custom dress on the red carpet, and who recently wore our Lena Jumpsuit also.

HBA: How has the response been for your handbag launch?
Galvan London: We have just launched our first capsule collection of handbags. In typical Galvan style they feature jewel-toned satins, tassels and sequins and are the perfect evening accessory. So far our clients have been thrilled to discover this new category, which we hope will grow in the next seasons.

HBA: Any other exciting upcoming plans for the brand you can share?
Galvan London: This wutumn we will be hosting some incredible events all around the world, from Singapore to Dallas, Athens to Los Angeles. We have been a global brand since day one, and this has only grown year after year.
