Fashion made a stand at last month’s golden globes, where black heralded both style and solidarity

In her acceptance speech for this year’s Cecil B. de Mille Award, Oprah Winfrey articulated so well the need to raise awareness for inequalities and abuse in Hollywood. Letting her voice make all the noise, this Versace dress is regal but refined – beautifully cut and looks perfect from every angle. World-class.

It’s been a while since I have seen someone bring such bohemian elegance to the red carpet, and Tracee Ellis Ross did just that in this silk and taffeta Marc Jacobs dress. A head-turning turban raised the sartorial bar even higher.

Ashley Judd always perfects age-appropriate fashion, and this Elie Saab gown is just the right dose of demure and daring.

Salma Hayek also wowed me in this Balenciaga dress, proving simplicity is often key when wanting to make a statement for all the right reasons.

Emeralds set against black are pure heaven and Catherine Zeta-Jones nails this mix-and-match Zuhair Murad that has power dressing written all over it.

I love Penelope Cruz’s contemporary gothic vibe in this Ralph & Russo Couture gown. It’s an absolute show-stopper and who better to wear it than Penelope?

I’ve always looked forward to seeing what Angelina Jolie wears on the red carpet and once again she delivers in this feathered Atelier Versace feathered cape and gown. An exquisite example of modest dressing done right.
