With the relationship between pearls and the Gulf stretching back thousands of years, Ras Al Khaimah is the ancestral home of the Arabian pearl and today is the location for Suwaidi Pearls. The Arabian Pearl farm is celebrating this history by collaborating with a select group of Emirati designers who are all inspired by their region’s pearling past, as well as renowned international jewellery designer, Sarah Ho.
Ring set with The Pearl of Arabia by Sarah Ho
Sarah has designed a white gold, diamond and inlaid mother-of-pearl enamel ring to hold The Pearl of Arabia, a unique pearl discovered by Suwaidi Pearls founder Abdulla Rashed Al Suwaidi in 2006. With its radiant lustre and perfect complexion, the pearl has remained in Abdulla’s personal collection until now. The ring’s design is inspired by Sarah’s visit to the pearl farm and traditional motifs from the region, with the designer commenting, “It was a magical experience. The knowledge I gained from Abdulla about the region and its rich history gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the pearls I work with.”

Similar inspirations have been used by the Emirates Jewellers, a group of designers, gemologists and craftsmen who have created jewels that blend Suwaidi pearls with their own unique styles.
Ring, Alserkal Jewellery
Alserkal Jewellery is the brainchild of Sheikha Alserkal, who brings her passion for collecting minerals and gemstones to creating jewels featuring native motifs to the UAE and MENA region. “I was drawn to the Suwaidi Pearls project from the very beginning,” Sheikha explains. “It’s the Gulf’s history revived and this perfectly complements my brand’s identity.”
Earrings, By Shurooq
Meanwhile Shurooq Al Midfa combines a love of nature and vintage romance in her jewellery label By Shurooq. Speaking about her pieces, Shurooq says, “I have designed a collection that honours the characteristics and feminine beauty of the pearl. It was heavily influenced by my visits to the farm, and inspired by the intricate patterns formed by the fishing nets.”

Also featuring designers Maryam Omaira, Harf W Nagsh, Leleganza Lusso and By Nadiya, the collaboration is just one of many initiatives hosted by Suwaidi Pearls that will focus on the history, journey and progress of the Arabian pearling industry. Suwaidi Pearls was established in 2005 and their distinctive pearls have already adorned jewels from major Maisons including Van Cleef & Arpels and Mouawad.
