A Letter From The Editor | Harper’s Bazaar Interiors, Summer 2022
Harper’s Bazaar Interiors Editor Ayesha S. Shehmir introduces the Summer 2022 issue
The New Rules of Beauty
Once a classical Parisian apartment, the revived pied-à-terre of an Arabian princess and philanthropist, gracing the cover, is a powerful lesson in creative freedom. Reimagined by all-women firm Tala Fustok Studio, the home is quintessentially French with a nod to the owner’s Middle Eastern roots. “We take a fully immersive approach that encapsulates a variety of different design aesthetics, and pushes the boundaries of contemporary and traditional design,” declares Tala Fustok, who had a vision of mixing light and dark to create contrasts that harmonise effortlessly with soft undertones, achieving an unexpected visual narrative.
‘Unexpected’ captures the zeitgeist this season – a celebration of opposites colliding to evoke drama, glamour and distinct results that are playful and luxurious at once. In honour of unconventional beauty, modern-day designers and architects are turning away from the oft-followed traditional methods and instead adopting a more ecological, avant-garde approach concerned with bending the rules to inject longevity, novelty and surprise. Such is the charm of Marina Raphael’s Porto Heli abode, too, characterised by warm, earthy tones and textures that imbue an endless sense of serenity. The 23-year-old Swarovski heiress and handbag designer has mastered a sustainable approach, choosing craftsmanship and timeless pieces that immerse the resort town’s past into its present.
Elsewhere, the pages unveil our tablescaping edit for summertime dinner parties– from an Amalfi Coast-inspired look by local brand Lavender & May and Saudi trendsetter Farah Tajeddin’s vibrant (and fruity) settings, to de Gournay’s maximal-style porcelain artistry and L’Objet’s balance of subtle and dramatic in collaboration with artist twins, The Haas Brothers.
We’ve also travelled to Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Monaco, an 1864 hotspot for the international elite – think kings, celebrities and leading figures in the arts to the principality’s very own Princess Grace – which has been gifted a contemporary update; Switzerland for the return of Design Miami/ Basel’s unforgettable 16th edition; The age-old rugged cliffs of Oman’s Hajar mountain range to experience the internationally acclaimed Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort; and Milan, to celebrate six decades of the Salone del Mobile furniture fair with quality, innovation and sustainability at the beating heart of its 2022 exhibition.
Prepare for a design journey of discovery, as we pay tribute to history and seize the new extraordinary.
