Chanel’s Iconic Rouge Noir Nail Polish Now Has Its Own Make-up Collection

Chanel’s legendary nail polish shade Rouge Noir has been reimagined into a limited-edition make-up collection that channels the 1990s

What began as a backstage experiment with make-up directors Dominique Moncourtois and Heidi Morawetz for Chanel’s Autumn/Winter 1994 ready-to-wear runway show – layering black marker over red nail polish to create a shade that would register in black-and-white photography – soon became a phenomenon.

The now-iconic look was first popularised by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, and Madonna soon followed, wearing the shade in her Take a Bow music video. Rouge Noir then returned to the runway for Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring/Summer 1995 show and became available to buy, immediately making history as the first brand to have a waiting list for a nail polish. Vamp nails quickly evolved into vamp lips, and soon after, vamp eyes. The look swept through the ’90s, embraced by icons including Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, and Winona Ryder.

Fast forward to 2026, and Chanel strikes again with an entire collection dedicated to Rouge Noir. Unveiled as a limited-edition series, the collection introduces two distinct make-up looks: the Rose Graphique and Rouge Obscura. The difference? The Rose Graphique softens the palette with pink undertones, while the Rouge Obscura pays homage to the house’s signature vamp aesthetic.

Through the collaboration between Comètes Collective member, Ammy Drammeh, and the Chanel Make-up Creation Studio, the limited-edition collection spans a complete beauty edit, featuring, an all-in-one mascara, three nail polishes – including the original Rouge Noir, Performer, and Moderniste shade – a luminous matte lip colour, three professional make-up brushes, a long-wear eyeliner and kohl pencil, and a multi-use glowstick. Additionally, two exclusive creations in the Rouge Noir shade that have been reimagined for the collection, are the eyeshadow and blush palette, and satin-finish liquid lipstick.

Rouge Noir Confidence

This palette has undergone an exclusive transformation to highlight the nuances of the House’s signature shade, harmonising a range of pink shimmer that subtly lifts the cheekbones, a soft mauve-pink-tone, and a pearly rosy-white highlighter that adds the perfect after-glow; each element carefully crafted to illuminate Rouge Noir.

Rouge Allure Velvet Rouge Noir

Embodying the true essence of Rouge Noir, this lipstick delivers a velvety-bold finish, enriched with intense pigment and striking colour. Le Vernis

The founding form of Rouge Noir is now part of a wider collection, joined by two more shades. Infused with a hint of pink, the Rose Graphique ensemble features Le Vernis in the vibrant shade Performer, seamlessly bridging deep burgundy with a burst of bright pink. Moderniste bottles a dim grey hue, gliding on with sleek strokes. Beyond the collection, Le Vernis is also available in a spectrum of shades, from sparkling lavendar to sunset orange.
