Grey Matter: A Letter From Our Editor | Harper’s Bazaar Arabia December 2024

Bazaar Arabia’s Editor in Chief, Olivia Phillips shares her end of the year reflections here

I found my first grey hair last week. How do I feel about it? No idea. Too busy to tell. I’m also nearly eight months’ pregnant. Vastly more worthy of consideration than a measly grey hair, one would wager, but that, too, has been somewhat dismissed in the bullet train that is Q4. (If you, like me, also happen to know what Q4 actually means, my sincere condolences). Anyway, rush, rush, rush. Remember mid-pandemic when we all solemnly swore to put in speed limits on life? Lol.

It’s thankfully not all grey skies (and hairs) ahead, though. Quite the opposite. As we head into a well-deserved end-of-year break, there’s much to look forward to, not least our delicious festive gift guide – more decadent than an entire Christmas dinner.

Speaking of extravagances, our watches and jewellery special also heralds great joy. Forget a sable, if you really know what you’re doing, this year you’ll be asking Santa to slip a Vacheron Constantin under the tree.

Other than that, plus a good stiff lie down of course, we can also be excited by the prospect that 2025 holds, as ever, that elusive magic of new-year promise. While no one really knows what’s next (although we’ve put some fashion forecasts together in our cover story), we owe it to ourselves to go into it with optimism and faith. Predictions about the future can often be pointless, but curiosity about it? That never gets old. I’ll bet it doesn’t even have any grey hairs.
