Lightning Hits Burj Khalifa During Thunderstorm

Lightning Hits The Burj Khalifa as residents take to social media to share video clips of yesterday’s weather phenomenon

The weekend is off to a damp start as the UAE experiences its second consecutive day of rain, accompanied by flashes of lightning and resounding thunderstorms. The National Center of Meteorology maintains a yellow alert for most regions in the UAE, urging caution during outdoor activities. Dubai Police, in response to the weather conditions, advocate for safe driving practices.

In light of the inclement weather, UAE government schools have shifted to distance learning for the day. Public sector and government employees are also working remotely. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai encourages private educational institutions to remain flexible, accommodating the needs of parents and students, including the option for distance learning.

For those wondering about Dubai’s rainfall patterns, The National reports that the UAE typically receives an annual average of about 100 millimeters of precipitation. However, last year, the emirates experienced a staggering 18 months’ worth of rain in just three days. On average, Dubai witnesses around 25 days of rainfall each year.

How often does the Burj Khalifa get hit by lightning?

Sources report that The Burj Khalifa experiences approximately 10 lightning strikes per year on average, owing to its status as the world’s tallest skyscraper.

To safeguard the building and its occupants, it is equipped with lightning rods that divert lightning strikes away from the structure and guide them safely into the ground.

Additionally, the Burj Khalifa’s construction materials, including concrete and steel, are excellent conductors of electricity, ensuring the swift and secure dissipation of electrical charges into the ground. As a result, the Burj Khalifa remains a remarkably safe structure, even in the presence of thunderstorms, thanks to its lightning rods and other protective measures.
