Watch UAE Storm: 10 Videos of Monday Morning’s Rain, Flooding, Hail and Lightning

Residents and nationals woke up to emergency alerts on their phones in the early hours of the morning as the government encourages all the private and public sector to work from home due to intense weather

Residents of the UAE woke up Monday morning to a surprise, starting the week with a heavy thunderstorm, a rare occurrence in the country. Although The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had predicted poor weather conditions for the weekend and today last Friday, many didn’t expect such stormy weather.

The UAE government encouraged private sector companies to give workers flexibility, allowing them to work from home on Monday. Many schools also choose to implement distance learning for the first day of the week for students’ safety.

Some residents enjoyed the hail, seeing the UAE covered in snow.

In Dubai, early risers shared videos of heavy rain causing road conditions to be poor.

Many took to social media to share how water is flooding the streets. Authorities are encouraging all residents and nationals to stay safe on the roads and to follow safety guidelines.

Earlier in the morning, lightning also lit up the sky.

The rain also affected the airport, filling the grounds with water.

It has been raining nonstop for a few hours.

However, some seemed to enjoy the weather, using the rain as a way to partake in sports.

Lightning Hits The Burj Khalifa

Back in October, the National Center of Meteorology issued a yellow alert for most regions in the UAE, in light of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Dubai residents took to social media to share videos of the world’s tallest building and other landmarks around Dubai appearing to be struck by lightning.

How often does the Burj Khalifa get hit by lightning?

Sources report that The Burj Khalifa experiences approximately 10 lightning strikes per year on average, owing to its status as the world’s tallest skyscraper.

To safeguard the building and its occupants, it is equipped with lightning rods that divert lightning strikes away from the structure and guide them safely into the ground.

Additionally, Burj Khalifa’s construction materials, including concrete and steel, are excellent conductors of electricity, ensuring the swift and secure dissipation of electrical charges into the ground. As a result, the Burj Khalifa remains a remarkably safe structure, even in the presence of thunderstorms, thanks to its lightning rods and other protective measures.
