Interview: Teyana Taylor Makes Her Dubai Debut

American recording artist and Kanye West protégé Teyana Taylor visits Dubai with Reebok, for whom she is a brand ambassador, and we chat exclusively to the rising star during her first trip to the desert.

Harper's Bazaar Arabia: Is this your first time in Dubai? What exciting plans do you have whilst you’re here?
Teyana Taylor: Yes it’s my first time. I passed through the airport on a stopover once and I felt like it was a tease. I couldn’t wait to come back and visit properly. There is so much do here, so I’ll try and squeeze in some fun things after my appearance at Reebok in Dubai Mall and my performance at Sole DXB.

HBA: What is it about the Middle East that inspires you?
TT: This is one of the best dressed places I’ve ever visited. Even on the plane on the way over hear, the Arab women were carrying the most exclusive and limited edition accessories whilst travelling, it was amazing. It really makes me see conservative fashion in a new way; the Middle East proves that you don’t have to show a lot of skin to be fashionable. I’m also really impressed with the beauty here, it’s all about the face and everyone’s make-up is on point.

HBA: What made you decide to work with Reebok?
TT: Collaborating with the brand has been a dream of mine since I was young. Whether it’s the Reebok Classics or the 5411’s, I always had a pair of Reeboks on, so when the brand reached it out it was an immediate YES.

HBA: If you had to choose one Reebok shoe to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be?
TT: That’s a hard decision. My my Classics are so comfortable but my 5411s are also so perfect they look good with anything, so I’d have to go with my 5411!

HBA: We need to know how to get your abs – they’re amazing!
TT: I have my own dance workout programme, which you can find on I do it all the time; it’s my favourite type of exercise. You can do the routines at home, so it’s a great way to get fit if you don’t like the gym or you feel uncomfortable working out around other people.

HBA: What was it like to work with Kanye West?
TT: Kanye signed me to his label in 2012 and he’s been amazing ever since. He’s like a big brother to me and he’s so passionate in everything he does. He puts so much effort in and I respect his work ethic so much.
