Inside Sotheby’s Modern And Contemporary Middle East Auction

Highlighting the artistic talent in the region, the online exhibition features 70 lots

This spring, art aficionados are in for a treat as the highly anticipated bi-annual Modern And Contemporary Middle East sale is currently taking place, offering a captivating glimpse into the works of influential modernist and avant-garde creatives from the region.

Aiming to celebrate the cultural richness and artistic innovation of the region, the auction features a carefully curated selection of 70 lots. The online-only sale is running till April 25 and it features artists from across North Africa, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, and other parts of the Middle East.

Sotheby’s Modern And Contemporary Middle East Auction: Featured Artists And Creations

The sale is led by two distinguished private collections predominantly assembled during the 1970s, and presents a unique opportunity to explore the diverse artistic landscapes of the region.

Among the standout pieces is an early masterpiece by Fahrelnissa Zeid, providing a window into the artist’s world with her evocative portrayal of the Istanbul skyline from her studio.

Additionally, the auction showcases works by pioneering Saudi artists Abdulhalim Radwi and Taha Al Sabban, alongside compelling contributions from Egyptian female artists Inji Efflatoun, Gazbia Sirry, and Khadiga Riaz as well as Iraqi painter Shakir Hassan Al Said.

Appreciating Abdulhalim’s the artwork that is estimated at Dhs 137,020 (GBP 30,000) to Dhs 228,370 (GBP 50,000), Sotheby’s website states: “His ability to merge popular culture and sentiments with newly acquired artistic techniques serves as a precursor to contemporary Saudi art today.”

Lebanese art takes its rightful place in the spotlight with captivating works by creatives such as Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, and Shafic Abboud.

North African art is also prominently featured, with notable pieces from Baya Mahieddine, Mohammed Melehi, Mahjoub Ben Bella, and Abdallah Benanteur, offering a rich tapestry of artistic expression from the region.
