From Working With Rosie Huntington-Whiteley To Perfecting Zoom Call Make-Up, Marc Reagan Is The Pro You Need To Know

Having worked in beauty for more than 15 years, 14 of those spent as director of global artistry at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Marc Reagan (@makeup.marc) knows a thing or two when it comes to make-up.

Recently taking up residency as Hourglass Cosmetics’ global director of artistry and education, 37-year-old Marc worked his way up from a beauty counter artist in San Francisco before making the leap across to New York City to work alongside legendary Bobbi Brown herself – a coveted position that shaped him into the professional he is today. During that position, Marc travelled the world with Bobbi and assisted her at fashion shows and campaign shoots, soaking in all of the techniques and sharpening his critical eye to develop his own skill set.

In his current role, Marc works to develop and elevate make-up artistry skills and techniques for the Hourglass Cosmetics artistry team. As one of the most respected artists in the beauty industry, Bazaar's Nina Catt caught up with the beauty pro to talk tips, tricks and trends to try…

Please can you tell us a little about Hourglass Cosmetics and the brand’s mission?
Hourglass is a cruelty-free beauty brand, known for its innovation and commitment to reinventing luxury cosmetics. We are best known for our complexion products that are undetectably transformative and effortless to apply. Launched in 2004, we have always been cruelty-free, and this year we are entering a new chapter to redefine what cruelty-free really means – pledging to be completely vegan by the end of 2020.

At Hourglass, we believe beauty and integrity should be synonymous, which is why we are as uncompromising with our products’ performance as we are with our commitment to animals.

We donate 1% of all profits from to our partner, the Nonhuman Rights Project, the only civil rights organisation working to secure fundamental rights for animals. This is a mission we hold very dear and will stay true to until animals are protected in the beauty industry and beyond.

You work closely with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. What's your all-time favourite Rosie make-up look?
Rosie is such a beautiful person and an absolute joy to work with. She is so passionate about sharing her experience as a model and providing a space for conversation through her social media platforms, which constantly motivates me to up my social game.

Something I love about working with Rosie is that she is a collaborator. She has a point of view and also appreciates the input of those she works with, including her glam teams. When we were together in London earlier this year, I loved the simplicity of one of the looks that we created for her. Rosie had radiant skin, a perfect terracotta nude lip, and eyeliner that had just the right flick.

What are the biggest beauty trends for 2020?
Radiant, glowing skin and playing up eyes in new ways.

With the new reality of what social interaction will look like through the COVID-19 pandemic, we are already seeing how people are shifting their focus to skincare. We’re more focused on complexion products that nourish the skin and experimenting with eye make-up while wearing a mask.

With COVID-19 currently keeping many of us at home, what are your tips for creating a quick no make-up, make-up look before a video call?
It’s all about minimal product with maximum impact.

Use a quick complexion touch-up that has skincare benefits built in so that it evens the skin tone, and plumps the skin all at once. Focus on under the eyes to neutralise any discolouration so you look fresh and awake for your video calls.

Dust your skin with a lightweight powder that will control shine in the T-zone. Powder will also smooth the appearance of your skin for your Zoom calls.

Define your brows with a pencil to enhance the structure and natural shape, then set the hairs and colour in place with a clear brow gel.

Let mascara do all the work! Press your mascara wand down to the base of the lashes to mark the skin in between, then wiggle the wand up through the tips of the lashes. This will intensify the volume and appear as if you tight-lined, creating depth and contrast along the lash line.

Add flush to the complexion with bronzer or blush, bringing out your cheeks to add a subtle dimension to your face.

Give your lips some hydration and colour with a lip balm and your favourite lip colour. Using brighter colours for video calls will brighten your look so now is the time to try something new!

When it comes to make-up, what trend do you think will last forever?
Highlighting. Everyone is looking for the simplest and most impactful way to create dimension in the face. Light-reflecting highlighters instantly bring the best features forward and create glow and radiance in the skin, which is essential to a complexion that looks healthy and youthful.

What is your top tip for preparing skin in the weeks leading up to a special occasion?
Take care of your body from the inside out. Focus on your diet and water intake and schedule any special skin treatments or facials far enough out so that your skin has time to recover and heal. Remember, it takes 28 days for your skin cells to turnover, so start the process a few months out.

What is the one Hourglass Cosmetics product you use on all faces?
The Ambient Lighting Palette – it’s a universal combination of colours that truly works on every skin tone. This formula of powder illuminates the skin and adds a lit-from-within glow that not only blurs imperfections in person, but photographs flawlessly too.

What are your tips and favourite products for keeping make-up in place all day in hot and humid climates?
When combatting hot climates, I absolutely cannot live without these two products; Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer - use it right after moisturiser. It not only preps the skin flawlessly for make-up, it also conceals redness, minimises the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and extends the wear of make-up through the most extreme weather. Secondly, our Veil Translucent Setting Powder. After you have applied your concealer and foundation, lock everything in place with this silky-smooth powder. No matter what type of finish you’re looking for, this powder sets your make-up while still bringing out natural radiance in the skin, so you never look flat or dull.

Which Middle Eastern woman always gets her beauty look right, every time?
Maya Ahmad. She is beautiful with and without make-up and I like that she never over does it.

Please share a beauty hack that we can replicate at home…
I’m sure a lot of make-up lovers have realised that they have more make-up than they know what to do with, so now is the time to experiment with some of those colours that you haven’t picked up in a while. If a colour is too strong, try sheering it out with lip balm to create a soft version of it, or mix it with a beige lip colour to soften the brighter tones.

What is your motto when it comes to beauty?
It’s all about individuality. I love using make-up as a way to enhance a person’s unique features and I think that it’s our job as beauty experts to embrace that.
