The Perfect Pout: What is The Russian Lip Technique?

Bazaar meets Dr Ayten Allaverdieva to learn more about the lip technique taking Doha by storm

What is the Russian lip technique? Harper’s Bazaar Qatar asks an expert all your burning questions about the treatment…

There’s a reason that clients book far in advance for an appointment with Dr. Ayten Allaverdieva at Plastic Surgicentre Doha – she is currently one of the most in-demand lip specialists in the city. With the Russian lip technique on the rise, Bazaar meets her to learn more…

What is the Russian lip technique?

The Russian lip technique is the most trending lip filler technique on social media right now. It allows practitioners to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip and give more height to the lips with minimal projection from the side, so the main goal here is to lift and define the lips rather than add excessive volume. It also tends to define the cupid’s bow and bring the lips into the subtle heart shape that so many patients covet. I would say this specific technique is more about sculpting and shaping the lips rather than just filling them.

Who is the best candidate for this?

This technique is ideal for those looking for a natural finish without excessive volume. For the very best results ideally this treatment requires no previous filler present in the lips, therefore if the patient has lip filler remaining from past treatments and wishes to have the lips injected with this particular technique, I would suggest dissolving the old filler first and injecting a new filler after two weeks. Not everyone is a good candidate for this treatment as there may be certain limitations due to the individual anatomy and shape of the lips. During the consultation I always try to advise what is the most suitable technique in each case, taking into consideration each person’s individual facial features. There is no one-size-fits-all.

Over your ten years in Qatar, what kinds of changes have you seen in the type of work requested by clients? Is there a new aesthetic style emerging in Doha?

In terms of plastic surgery, the list of commonly requested surgeries is broadly the same – tummy tuck, breast surgeries, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, liposuction, most of the time in combination with fat transfer to sculpt the body. Over the years, however, the concept of liposculpture has changed and, with newly emerging techniques and devices, we have been witnessing growth in demand for high-definition liposuction, which is an advanced liposculpting procedure that requires more precise tools and techniques to create chiseled contours and to enhance the visibility of muscles and curves. In terms of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, we have seen more of a shift in terms of what is defining beauty standards. Social media dictates many trends including more of a sharp V-shaped oval face with very defined cheekbones, a chiseled jawline and lifted eyebrows (the so called ‘cat eyes’). I am always, however, pro-natural in my approach and I’m strongly against creating clones, regardless of what the trend is. I always try to analyse each patient’s individual facial features and customise the treatment according to their needs. I’m very pleased to witness an increase in the number of patients asking for natural-looking results.

What advice can you offer women in terms of finding the right practitioner?

In the medical field as a rule of thumb one of the most reliable ways to find the right practitioner is to ask for recommendations from the people you trust – your friends, family, colleagues and other real patients, who have had similar procedures. Most of my patients come to me by reference or after seeing results of my work on someone they trust. I also advise doing your own research and reading patient reviews on different forums. Try to find a doctor who features before and after photos on their website or on social media to get an idea about his or her style of work. Talking to a doctor in person is also very important as during the consultation you can feel if you can trust them. This is key to building a solid doctor/patient relationship. Choosing the right practitioner may take some time, but if you find one that works for you, then you can comfortably stick with them for life.
