Its official - wedding season in the UAE is here and the excitement surrounding what you will choose to wear on the big day has already reached fever pitch. But not all brides-to-be are after the OTT bridal collections you’ll see at boutiques and department stores. Many are on the hunt for a trendier and more bohemian alternative in a wallet-friendly price range.

Enter Ginger + Poppy, Dubai’s brand new bridal boutique offering a laid-back sensibility through its portfolio of lesser-known labels who are doing this differently. Here, we meet British-Palestinian May Martin, the entrepreneur changing the rules of bridal…

Harper's BAZAAR Arabia: Tell us about Ginger + Poppy?
May Martin: Ginger + Poppy was created to offer a relaxed, modern and refreshing approach to bridal in the UAE. Every designer we carry has been chosen for their individual aesthetic; they believe in the non-traditional, the unconventional and push the boundaries of bridal fashion.  We want to introduce a fresh experience into the Middle Eastern bridal scene with dresses and accessories that offers a style that strays from the norm in.

HBA: Who is the Ginger + Poppy woman?
MM: She’s someone who stays true to herself and doesn’t want to conform to the traditional. Whether she’s a romantic, free-spirited, elegant, minimal or modern bride, she is always are effortlessly cool.

HBA: You used to work in interior design, why did you decide to start a bridal boutique?
MM: When I was looking for my own wedding dress, I really struggled to enjoy the whole process and find a dress that I could look in the mirror and say, “wow, this is perfect for me”. I ended up traveling overseas to find my dream dress, which was logistical nightmare. I questioned why there was a gap missing in Dubai for these designers, and after many discussions with other women and plenty of research, I thought we should bring them to Dubai.

HBA: Who are some of the designers you’re carrying?
MM: We are launching with three designers who are all unique and have distinctly individual styles and designs.

Made With Love, hailing from Australia, embodies the perfect blend of traditional and modern.  They have the most beautiful open backs, unique lace patterns and plunging necklines.  They are romantic yet cool but also slightly sexy.

Bo & Luca, also Australian, who really re-write the rules of bridal design. Not driven by trends or traditions, using careful craftsmanship, they create the most intricate hand beading using metallic threads, stones, sequins, faux pearls and hand cut silk petals which adorn cuffs, bodices and waistbands.  Their fabrics are all hand-dyed in loose-leaf white tea which gives the most luxurious texture and colour.

Last but certainly not least, we have Alexandra Grecco from New York City. Their dresses have definitely been created for the modern romantic.  For brides who love classic, clean and minimal styles with a touch of whimsy in the details.

HBA: How can people find you?
MM: We’re opening our physical store in April, but for now, brides-to-be can get in touch via the website, email or Instagram.
