March in Dubai is a busy month for female empowerment and it’s about to get busier as the inaugural Femme Festival enters the fray ahead of Women's Day. A project by the people behind Female First Sessions, the week-long event features a collection of talks, activities and screenings to inspire the modern feminist.
The founders of Female First Sessions, Megane Quashie and Nour Zaghoul, began the platform with the aim to “uplift, showcase and promote female talent in the region, though creative and innovative outlets.” The Femme Festival continues their work on a grander scale, shining a spotlight on creators, artists and other icons from around the region. Notable names include Lebanese filmmaker Pam Nasr, DJ Sonya and model-turned-comic actress Michelle de Swarte.
The festival begins with a launch meet at the Apple Store in Dubai Mall where Quashie and Zaghoul discuss art, music and feminine identity. From 3rd to 8th March, participants can indulge in an exciting programme that includes slam poetry, panel sessions and even dancing. The highlight is a cinematic event showcasing a series of short films produced by rising female directors from around the world.
