Top 10 At Dubai’s Downtown Design 2017

From spurts of colour to celestial-inspired designs, showcases at this year’s design fair were filled with joie de vivre

The centrepiece of this year’s Dubai Design Week was Downtown Design, the region’s most beloved and increasingly global contemporary design fair that returned for a fifth time with its largest edition to date. “We’re very excited to be marking our fifth year in a beautiful glass-fronted venue overlooking the D3 (Dubai Design District) waterfront that houses our largest and most diverse show to date,” Fair Director Rue Kothari said in a statement.

A remarkable over-150 brands from 28 countries, both fair frequenters and first-timers, dressed the fair’s D3 space this year, bringing forth the newest, most innovative creations across 26 categories, from furniture to flooring to textiles to tableware. “The quality of our brands and sheer scope of their individual presentations will surpass all previous editions,” Kothari added.

We feasted our eyes on booths set up like living spaces, brimming with colour, materials and textures that set the tone for the season’s most spectacular design trends. There were clear nods to geometric patterns and celestial and organic design with metal accents accentuating the furnishings.

It’s crystal clear which trend was an exhibitor favourite. The fair glistened with lighting that ranged from oversized statement crystal chandeliers from Baccarat and Serip to nature-inspired installations by Preciosa and Klove. Furniture brand Moroso didn’t shy away from colour with its 2017 collection boasting warm tones of red and brown to cool blue and green hues. Many went bold with gold, such as lighting brand and fair newcomer Sans Souci, evidently whetting the region’s appetite for opulent interiors.

Downtown Design ran from 13-16 November during Dubai Design Week in D3.
