From Hatha Yoga To Winding Down With Netflix, Saudi Arabia’s First Female News Anchor Shares Her Daily Routine
Weam Al Dakheel takes Bazaar through a typical day in her life…
On a typical work day when I have no field work or special-event coverage required, I wake up by my alarm at 9:00AM. Recently, I’ve really tried to stop checking my phone as soon as I wake up, as I’m trying to reduce the tension and anxiety that accompanies my work in the media industry. After washing my face and doing the daily-care routine that my skincare specialist devised based on my skin and the nature of my work, I drink 330 ml of water with a squeeze of lemon or some organic vinegar to help my body release any toxins. I then begin my Hatha Yoga exercises; a great habit that I began several years ago when I was seeking to achieve mental balance and kick off my lengthy day with some peacefulness.
I have my breakfast at 9:30AM starting with a cup of coffee I made myself; a daily routine that I acquired during quarantine, along with getting used to preparing my own meals. I never hesitate to enjoy any food that I’m craving for breakfast! Then, it takes me around an hour or an hour and a half to get ready to go out. At 10:00AM, without wearing any make-up, I head to my job at the Saudi Broadcasting Authority to fulfil my duties as the Managing Director of the Documentary Film Centre. A busy day then begins, leaving no time for me to eat anything, which is why I often miss lunch.

As my news anchor stint approaches at 1:30PM, I head to the studio to put on my make-up and get camera-ready. I only wear make-up on the days I know I will go live, otherwise I’m pretty satisfied with a good moisturising cream to give my skin a rest. I do still always keep a foundation in my bag, though, along with a blusher, eyeliner, and mascara in case of any unplanned arrangements. I finish work at around 5:00PM, after which I head home or sometimes take a ride on my bike at the Wadi Hanifah near my house in Riyadh to energise myself after a long day. I then cook my own dinner once I get back home.
          Â
As a treat during weekends and holidays, I wake up with no alarm, do my daily skincare routine, some yoga exercises, and then make breakfast while listening to some jazz. I also really enjoy running or cycling near my house. I avoid watching any news after 10:00PM and prefer to watch comedy series on Netflix until it’s time for bed. I then do another in-depth skincare routine after such a long day before I go to sleep.
