5 Sustainable Designers To Look Out For At Fashion Forward

Dubai’s hotly-anticipated fashion week is just around the corner, and this year we’ll be turning our attention to designers who create with an environmentalist attitude

The climate crisis has been a topic on many designers’ lips this Fashion Week – and rightly so. The stats surrounding global warming are alarming, and fashion is playing a huge part in the demise of the planet’s eco-system.

A runway show probably isn’t a beacon of sustainability, but aiming to put the message of sustainability on equal footing with the fashion are five regional designers, who are all showing their spring/summer 2020 collections next weekend at Dubai’s Fashion Forward.

Fashion and consumption have always gone hand-in-hand, but this year, Roni Helou, Reemami, Sadeem, Hass Idriss and Farah Wali are doing their part to be less wasteful, promote an overall slower fashion cycle and use organic materials.

Ahead, five sustainable designers you don’t want to miss at FFWD.

Roni Helou
Beirut-based ready-to-wear label Roni Helou prides themselves in their local production methods and has a hand in nuturing young talent at Creative Space Beirut, a school for budding fashion designers.

Reemami
Sustainability has always been at the core of the Reemami brand since its inception in 2010. The Dubai-based label produces pieces in small batches in order to minimise waste. They are also totally fur, feather and leather-free.

Sadeem
Saudi designer Aljawharah Sadeem Alshehail never uses synthetic fabrics, which not only require petroleum-based energy, but also pollute our rivers and oceans with hazardous chemicals. Instead, they use non-toxic fabrics, which are all sustainably sourced.

Hass Idriss
HASSIDRISS is all about prolonging the lifecycle of a garment. The designer upcycles vintage pieces to recreate unique silhouettes with a couture sensibility.

Farah Wali
Farah Wali uses recycled fabric and sustainable ink to create the clothes in her eponymous brand.
