The Salvatore Ferragamo Museum In Italy Launches ‘Sustainable Thinking’ Exhibition
Exploring sustainable fashion in Florence
The hot topic of sustainability, specifically in the fashion industry, has been igniting discussions around the globe, from Paris and Milan to London and New York and across the Middle East.
The Sustainable Thinking exhibition at Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, Florence, Italy
A key party to this discussion is Salvatore Ferragamo who have opened an exhibition devoted to the topic at its museum in Florence. Fashion and green art are examined through contemporary masterpieces and experimentation with alternative materials.
Located in Florence’s Palazzo Spini Feroni, a stone’s throw away from Ponte Vecchio, the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum is dedicated to the fashion work of its namesake, Italian shoe designer.
Designed by Stefania Ricci, Director of Museo Salvatore Ferragamo and Fondazione Ferragamo, with Giusy Bettoni, Arabella S. Natalini, Sara Sozzani Maino and Marina Spadafora, the exhibition entitled Sustainable Thinking explores Ferragamo’s own sustainability with the brand’s revolutionary use of natural, recycled and innovative materials to the label’s more recent experimentation with environmentally-friendly methods and techniques.

The collection features the work of various artists and international fashion designers who provide their own interpretation of a more mindful relationship with nature and its deep connection with technique, the use of organic materials and creative recycling, to highlight the importance of collective commitment to the environment.
The Sustainable Thinking journey begins with founder, Salvatore Ferragamo’s preliminary research into materials in the 1920s, which include hemp, cellophane and fish skin, before moving on to instillations using ancient crafting techniques using the art of recycling and the rediscovery of handcrafting traditions.
Original shoes created by Salvatore from the 1920s through the 1950s can also be seen preserved in the fashion brand’s historic archives.

Sustainable Thinking extends beyond Museo Salvatore Ferragamo with two special sections curated by Sergio Risaliti that are open to the public until July at two of the most important Florentine museums: Palazzo Vecchio (in the Sala delle Udienze), a symbol of Florence and where the city government is located, and Museo Novecento.
