The UAE woke up to thunder, lightning, and strong winds on Friday morning. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had forecasted two days of stormy weather, leading into the weekend.

The intense weather conditions only lasted a few hours on Friday morning.

The UAE government encouraged private sector companies to give workers flexibility, allowing them to work from home on Friday, while many private schools throughout the country will be ending the school week with a day of distance learning.

Close to DIFC, some vehicles were reported as having issues driving in the conditions, as residents attempted to make their way into their offices.

Naturally, residents and nationals took to social media to share videos of the rain, thunder and lightning.

Some residents experienced emergency alerts on their phones from the authorities.

Lightning Hits The Burj Khalifa

Back in October, the National Center of Meteorology issued a yellow alert for most regions in the UAE, in light of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Dubai residents took to social media to share videos of the world’s tallest building and other landmarks around Dubai appearing to be struck by lightning.

How often does the Burj Khalifa get hit by lightning?

Sources report that The Burj Khalifa experiences approximately 10 lightning strikes per year on average, owing to its status as the world’s tallest skyscraper.

To safeguard the building and its occupants, it is equipped with lightning rods that divert lightning strikes away from the structure and guide them safely into the ground.

Additionally, Burj Khalifa’s construction materials, including concrete and steel, are excellent conductors of electricity, ensuring the swift and secure dissipation of electrical charges into the ground. As a result, the Burj Khalifa remains a remarkably safe structure, even in the presence of thunderstorms, thanks to its lightning rods and other protective measures.
