Keeping Up With Karen Wazen: Bazaar Junior Spring/Summer 2020

Mother, entrepreneur, content creator. Harper’s Bazaar Arabia Junior asks Karen Wazen to share it all. From motherhood to fashion, beauty, and more here’s everything you need to know about the social media superstar.

On Family And Life...

How has your life changed since your cover shoot with Bazaar Junior back in 2016? It has changed on so many levels. I got to know myself better and I’m a lot clearer on my purpose and passions in life. In terms of my career, I have taken the exciting path as an entrepreneur and developed my own brand.

What inspired you to launch Karen Wazen Eyewear? I wanted to give a piece of me to the world and what best represents me is my sunglasses! Being a mother means… Loving unconditionally.

What surprised you about becoming a mother? I discovered I was much stronger than I thought. And the second time? Whether you have one child or three, you have the same responsibilities and experiences. Of course, being a mother to three children under one and managing work at the same time was very intense, but with a great support system and a positive outlook I was able to create a balanced and healthy family life.

How do you manage the juggle? I take things day by day and I make sure to separate my work life from family life. Your biggest weakness? My children. Your greatest strength? My children! The secret to being a successful business owner? Believing in yourself and not being afraid to dream.

How do you unwind? By surrounding myself with people that I love. Causes close to your heart? UNHCR (The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and SESOBEL. Motto you live your life by? Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

On Fashion...

My personal style is… Effortless, comfortable and chic. Did becoming a mother change your style? No, I’ve always put my comfort first. Designers you love? Andrea Wazen and Maria Grazia for Dior. High street brands? Zara, Frankie Shop and COS.

Who is your style icon? Princess Diana — to me, she embodied a modern and versatile woman that could effortlessly go from being in cycling shorts and sneakers to a beautiful gown. What’s your go-to red carpet look? An elegant dress with a simple up-do and statement jewellery. Your off-duty look? Sweatpants and a crop top. Most cherished item? My vintage Dior saddle bag — it was the first designer item I received from my parents and I still wear it to this day. Celebrity wardrobe you’d like to raid? Hailey Bieber’s.

Favourite childrenswear labels? Il Gufo, Fendi and Zara. Do your children have an opinion on their outfit choices? My daughters love dresses and Georgie likes to feel comfortable in whatever he’s wearing.

On Beauty...

I cannot live without… Huda Beauty’s liquid matte lipstick in Bombshell, Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation and Go Big or Go Home Volumising Mascara by KVD Vegan Beauty. Favourite fragrance? Narciso Rodriguez For Her. Secret beauty hack for mothers? Try and get as much sleep as possible and buy a good concealer. Favourite local beauty salon? LaLoge.

On Culture & Tech...

A city you adore? London — I have some really beautiful memories from there. Favourite family holiday destination? Lebanon because we’re surrounded by family and the kids can connect with their roots.

Best place to eat in the UAE? Salt. Top dish? The burgers, of course! Best movie to watch with the kids? Moana. Favourite indoor family activity? Dancing. Current read? Becoming by Michelle Obama.

Pros of social media? Connecting with the world. Cons of social media? Cyberbullying. Apps you can’t live without? Instagram, VSCO, Google Calendar and Shazam.
