With such rich and enduring heritage and diverse physical landscapes, the Middle East and North Africa region provides travellers with Seven Wonders of the World and more: mountains, islands, deserts, beaches, waterfalls, wadis and cosmopolitan hubs. It comes as no surprise, then, that a community of the world’s keenest and most seasoned globetrotters voted three cities close to home as some of the world’s must-visit locations.
TripAdvisor has released their wanderlust-worthy 2019 Travellers’ Choice List, charting the top 25 destinations worldwide according to their online members, who regularly rate and review the best of what nations have to offer.
In 9th place is Marrakesh, Morocco. The vibrant city has long been considered a creative capital and melting-pot of cultural influences by top designers, singers, artists and athletes, many of whom are regular visitors to North African nation. It caters to a range of travellers, with a scattering of both luxury five-star hotels and backpackers’ hostels.
TripAdvisor says of the Moroccan metropolis: ‘The “Red City” of Marrakesh is a magical place, brimming with markets, gardens, palaces, and mosques.’ It lists Le Jardin Secret, La Maison de la Photographie and the Boucharouite Museum as must-see sites.
Dubai, UAE takes 10th place. The Emirati city is at the cutting edge of modernity and knows how to impress. A multicultural hub, it boasts an experience for everyone - families, thrill-seekers, couples, shoppers, beach-lovers and culture buffs alike – and it will surely leave you awestruck.
TripAdvisor says of the city: ‘Dubai is a destination that mixes modern culture with history, adventure with world-class shopping and entertainment.’ It suggests Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, Gurunanak Darbar Sikh Temple and Kite Beach as places not to miss.
Hurghada, Egypt came in 21st place. The Red Sea coastal town is home to a myriad of Egypt's renowned beaches and a whole host of stunning beach resorts, offering water sports from scuba diving to sailing. Souks and more traditional eateries allow travellers to delve into the country's unique heritage.
TripAdvisor says of the seaside town: ‘Stunning coral reefs and turquoise waters perfect for windsurfing have made Hurghada, on Egypt's Red Sea Coast, a busy resort town.’ It cites Makadi Water World, Mahmya Island and Scuba Hurghada Diving Center as the top places to go.
Emirates Airlines also won TripAdvisor’s award for the world’s Best First Class cabin.
