Oscar-winning Hollywood director Sofia Coppola, has collaborated with the House of Chanel to create an artistic video collage in homage to the brand’s iconic founder, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. The artistic collaboration was created using images and videos from Chanel’s archives to deliver a very contemporary vision of the House of Chanel on the occasion of the brand’s Mademoiselle Privé exhibition taking place in Tokyo this month.
Tokyo represents the fifth chapter of Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé, an immersive experience designed to relay the story of the brand’s creation, showcasing its inherent values of inimitable savoir-faire and a devotion to the very essence of luxury. Coppola’s video tribute embraces the vision of ‘Mademoiselle Prive’ and draws upon her long-standing relationship with the maison which dates back to her experience interning alongside Karl Lagerfeld in his creative studio in her teenage years.
“I did a collage from the Chanel archives, trying to capture the essence of Chanel, what Coco started, and Karl and Virginie have continued, bringing Coco’s modern vision to women today. Chanel embodies chic Parisian style and I tried to incorporate the playfulness Karl always brought to his approach,” explained Sofia Coppola. “I loved looking through the footage of so many beautiful collections and the iconic women throughout its history.”
