Known as Makeup By Mario on Instagram with a 9.5 million following, the social media sensation speaks to Bazaar Arabia about the ins and outs of being the ultimate glam expert


The thirty-eight-year-old American make-up mogul has created quite the storm on social media with his spectacular beauty products, celebrity collaborations like the iconic Kim Kardashian Met Gala 2021 look, and beyond.  Here, Mario Dedivanovic speaks to Bazaar Arabia about the ins and outs of being a successful make-up artist; his biggest challenges; how we can all soon shop Makeup By Mario in the UAE; and of course, what we all want to know his relationship with one of the most famous Kardashian sisters. 

Harper’s Bazaar Arabia (HBA): Could you please share insight into your new make-up collection that recently launched?

Mario Dedivanovic (MD): It was a dream of mine for 20 years to launch my own make-up brand, and this is a rebirth in my career where I get to offer my artistry and techniques to the entire beauty community. The collection is made of products for everyday use: smart formulas that can be applied effortlessly.  

HBA: What is your favorite make-up product and why?

MD: It’s hard to choose, because I love all of the innovations that we’ve launched so far, but my favorite product right now is our Ultra Suede(tm) Lipstick that just launched on the brand’s one year anniversary last month. I named each of the shades after the incredible team members who helped me launch the brand, and whose passion and dedication was the fuel to bring my dream to life.  

HBA: As a beauty expert, what are the biggest challenges you face while creating collections?

MD: The biggest challenge I’ve found when creating new product is speed-to-market. As a make-up artist, I’m constantly evolving creatively. As a product innovator, sometimes it takes years to get new product into the hands of customers! 

HBA: From all of the work you have done, what would you say has been your favorite project?

MD: The creation of the Makeup by Mario brand has been the most rewarding experience of my career. It’s an exciting adventure to lead a company every day.

HBA: How is it like working with Kim? You had previously collaborated with her on a product line and also did her make-up for this year’s Met Gala, could you please share a bit about your relationship with her and your experience?

MD: It’s always an incredible experience working with Kim. I’ve been working with her for over 13 years, and she still is – and will always be- the ultimate glam girl at heart. She’s really a dream client.  

HBA: Could you please share any exciting future projects?

MD: We have a lot of exciting collections in the pipeline. Reaching our one year brand anniversary last month was an important milestone, but I have been working for years to develop some of the products we’re launching in 2022. We have so many exciting projects ahead of us, and a great community behind us!

HBA: Makeup By Mario is coming to Dubai and we are thrilled. Could you share a bit about expanding to the Middle East? How can we shop Makeup By Mario in the UAE?

MD: The Middle East, and Dubai in particular, has always been very special to me. I was recently in Dubai for a talk at City Centre Mirdif to discuss the future of beauty, I’ve also done a few Masterclasses in the region, and I’m always so inspired by the culture, the women, the love for glamour and beauty. Although my product has always been available for shipment internationally, I’m very excited to bring the brand to the Middle East, launching with a retail partner in early 2022. I can’t wait to come back soon for the launch!
