Tokyo Fashion Week Is Going Digital
Stream the latest styles straight to your home
The coronavirus strikes again, but this time no events have been cancelled. Instead of shutting down Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo entirely, organisers have opted to go digital and host the show without a live audience to avoid crowding. This week the Autumn Winter 2020 collections of the biggest names in Japanese fashion will be available to livestream on their official website.
Featuring much-loved labels like Hideaki Yoshihara, Jotaro Saito and Mint Designs, the event is Japan’s biggest fashion showcase. Collections will be presented as usual with models walking the runway, but the front row will not have any of the usual attendees.
Amid ongoing debate about the sustainability and environmental impact of fashion shows, many designers have been experimenting with livestreams. Most recently Giorgio Armani chose to livestream during Milan Fashion Week over concerns about coronavirus. Other fashion events haven’t been so lucky and were cancelled entirely or postponed indefinitely – the Met Gala being one example.
