Here’s How Farfetch Is Fronting The Sustainable Fashion Movement

The online retail platform has introduced initiatives to bring about positive change in the industry

Having realised the gravity of the climate crisis we’re in and the part fashion has to play in it (as one of the world’s major polluting industries – it’s responsible for over 8 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, per a Qantis report), it’s well known that many brands are turning to sustainable alternatives.

Farfetch, one of the foremost online luxury fashion retailers, is using their platform for good and empowering others to do the same. They’ve launched their new ‘Positively Farfetch’ campaign, celebrating their eco-minded schemes, with the help of an international cast of trendsetters including Reem Kanj, Nuria Val and Primmy Patnasiri. The company has joined forces with a whole host of brands and boutiques in an attempt to transform today’s fashion industry into one that can coexist with our environment, hoping to become the ultimate ‘global platform for good in luxury fashion’.

The concrete action they’ve taken? For starters, Farfetch now boast 100% recyclable packaging. It’s also 100% Forest Stewardship Council certified – meaning the paper and card it uses is sourced from from sustainably managed forests.

Through the platform’s partnership with ethical fashion app Good On You, you can now seek out the most eco-conscious labels from around the world, whilst also comparing your favourite brands side-by-side in terms of their efforts towards sustainability in their production methods. They’re here to show you that making the conscious choice doesn’t have to mean compromising on style or comfort.

Farfetch proclaims it’s time we treated our unworn, worn-out or unwanted pieces better. What happens to clothes once we discard them? By offering customers pre-order and made-to-order services as well as rental, resale and repair services, the luxury retailer is ensuring we consider the life of our garments beyond our immediate use of them (a life that doesn’t involve ending up in landfill – according to a McKinsey report, nearly three-fifths of all clothing ends up in incinerators or landfills within a year of being produced).

They’re also investing in the future, by showing their support for pioneering eco-minded businesses through Dream Assembly, a fashion and retail start-up accelerator providing a launchpad for fledgling sustainable business concepts.

And finally, you can now shop the new Reformation x Farfetch 10-piece swimwear collection. Each swimsuit from the sustainable womenswear brand makes innovative use of waste – fishing nets and materials in landfills have been upcycled into a nylon fibre, from which the pieces are crafted.
