Is Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty The Next Victoria’s Secret?

Many of the Fenty brand’s decisions have drawn comparisons to competitor Victoria’s Secret

Last night, Rihanna presented her autumn/winter 2019 collection at New York Fashion Week. As ever, the Savage X Fenty show was all about inclusivity (lest we forget about last year’s show, which was infamously closed by a nine-month-pregnant Slick Woods),

“My vision for the Savage X brand has always been having women feel confident and expressing themselves,” said the former BAZAAR cover star, in a behind-the-scenes video process posted on the online shopping portal.

Guests arriving at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn on Tuesday night were required to leave their phones behind and drop them in sealed pouches at the door – in large part to make sure the show remains under wraps until 20 September, when it will be exclusively streamed by Amazon Prime across 200 countries.

The decision to broadcast the lingerie show has naturally drawn comparisons to competitor lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret, who have come under fire recently for their archaic view of female beauty lack of diversity. They subsequently announced they would be cancelling the show.

At Savage X Fenty, models – who were of different ethnicities, size and shapes, took centre stage, dancing and stomping across the set.

Inclusivity has always been at the core of the Fenty brand, from their record-breaking shade range of the Fenty Beauty foundation line, to Rihanna making history when she launched the brand, making her the first black woman to head an LVMH brand.
